PlatinumPrince

(I will be reviewing all of the SPG Marriott hotels for Platinum Status in May and mostly August 2017, so do check out the other reviews if you wish to compare Dubai hotels in the group. I also take into consideration the level of hotel, so scoring this hotel 5/5 is for its class at level 2) This hotel did score a 5/5 but had to recover from a 2/5 from check in and the comments of one staff member (whom I shall save from naming) but let us call her Lady J. I was looking forward to my stay this time around given a fantastic level of service and recognition on a stay I had a couple of months ago, which even prompted me to send an email to the GM commending him on the operation of the hotel.... however... The check in process this time around was below average due a foolish comment, that really didn't need to be made. Adel at the front desk was checking me in (who later becomes one of the stars to this review) and met me courteously with the standard thank you for your loyalty platinum welcome... I made a point of making a reasonable request ahead of arrival of the desire to be upgraded to a room with a washing machine in it (for just one night not the whole stay), as this would be a 12 day stay and would be very useful to turn around a carry on suitcase of clothes to cover 2 weeks. Adel mentioned there was not a suite available at check in (which is perfectly understandable as on occasion hotels do have high occupancy and this is something platinums can accept)... however... upon challenging this to ask whether it would be possible to upgrade later during the stay this was met with unnecessary resistance... Lady J who was not even checking me in jumped in and commented that "we do not upgrade guests once they have checked in" .... (don't just be making stuff up Lady J) It's clear at that point for me, that the platinum level meant little and number 1 on the core company value list of SPG to "go the extra step" was trumped by the "hassle" of having to do something in a system to move a guest from one room to another. (Lady J... disappointing.... disappointing) Upon seeing the look of hopes and dreams shot down in my demeanour... Adel did interject again to say he would do his best to find a room later in the stay.... which prompted a "thank you... thats all I ask just a little effort" on my part. The opening minute of any stay sets the tone, so my advice is to be very careful on check in as to what tone is set! After this it was always going to be an uphill struggle as I was definitely "miffed" at what had just occurred. (also the reason for the 3/5 for SPG recognition) However in the days following albeit at my constant reminding of the front desk (who did have similar responses of "no availability" "no availability" they finally got it that rather than saying "no availability" perhaps they can look in their little old system to see when there would be "availability" Adel stepped up mighty and proud and took it upon himself to go the extra step (well done for living the values Adel) and proceeded to find a day where there might be availability he did call me in the evening of one of my nights with the good news that they could move me to a room with a washing machine... Hooray... That coupled with his banter of telling me I looked like Buffon (an Italian goalkeeper 10 years my senior but nonetheless a good looking chap) repaired a lot of the damage from check in. Still this only bought the hotel to a 4 for me for platinum guests. It was the efforts of a couple of other staff in the hotel that just about tipped Four Points Downtown over the 5/5 mark. Joy in the coffee shop was actually an absolute delight... her smiles each day and remembering my name by heart rivalled the team at Ritz Carlton.. The same for Lady A (whose name escapes me) from the British style pub inside the hotel, who remembered my drinks from previous nights and duly made a point of offering the same again... Finally the luck of having Shalini check me out may have been the final inch to push this to a 5. (Shalini had checked me in on the previous stay a few months before and had been exemplary... and she was the only one in the hotel who had recognised that I had sent the email a couple of months prior praising the staff and thanked me whole heartily for the comments I had sent.... Ohhh how I wish you had been there at check in Shalini!) But all in all with everything said, this is an exceptional hotel (in the level 2 category)... the bar and cafe are great to spend time in and the rooms are above standard for level 2. Concierge are engaging and there is some genuine conversation to be had at times with the staff... rather than all transactional - a quality normally reserved for 5 star properties. Above Par:- Rooms Outlets Value for Money Below Par (recommendations):- SPG recognition (make a little more fuss over the Plats... despite our incessant whining... we kind of earned it with how much we support the company) TV channels ( definitely need an upgrade here to at least movie channels) Plug sockets (there is nothing more annoying than furniture that has almost been specifically selected to cover the plug sockets next to the bed - add extension cables to prevent guest having to re-arrange furniture) As a final note, I highly recommend this property to Plats looking for a more budget friendly stay in Dubai. TOP TIPS Don't use the private taxis outside the hotel, they are overpriced and normal taxis pass by the corner of the hotel to the left every couple of minutes Sports and free popcorn in the pub inside the hotel! Monorail is closer than you think and a better option at rush hour periods (8:00-9:30) or (17:00-19:00) Download Movies/TV series before arriving
